Vines: Average age 30-55 years old. Pomerol is a small but highly prized AOC northeast of Libourne on the right bank of the Dordogne. This appelation produces some of the most famous and sought after wines in Bordeaux such as Chateau Petrus, which lies only 400 meters from Chateau Thibeaud-Maillet! All of Pomerol's wines are based on the Merlot grape which has very good ageing potential. Other well known estates neighbouring the château are l'Evangile, Gazin, and Le Bon Pasteur. Despite the lack of a "Grand Cru" classification in Pomerol, the wines are quite expensive because relatively few are produced and because of the high demand from wine lovers all over the world.

Soil / Terroir: The vineyards comprise 2 hectares located at the tip of Pomerol on a gentle slope that runs to the northeast at the border of the St. Emilion appelation. The Merlot grown here will retain its elegance even in very warm years but will also ripen well in lesser years. The soil is composed of sandy and siliceous clay with some "Crasse-Fer" ferrous minerals. The vineyard maintenance is the same as employed by its famous neighbor Château Petrus, however, the most important factor for the quality of the wines is the friendly and passionate vigneron Monsieur Roger Duroux-Richardot who, with a respectable age of 83, is still the driving force behind the high quality of this wine. The Chateau has been around since the early 1800s, has always been family owned, and it now belongs to the association of "vignerons independants."

Vinification: The optimally ripe grapes are hand harvested and undergo traditional vinification with long maceration and fermentation in stainless steel tanks for several weeks. Then an élévage of about 18-20 months occurs (depending on the year) in oak barrels of 2 years and older.

Taste: Rich and already complex with a nice warm touch of wood. Light ripe prunes, cherry pits, earthy and almost port-like, yet very elegant. A nice balance, layered with fine acidity and ripe tannins. Great length with clean fruit in the aftertaste. This wine showcases Pomerol and optimally ripe Merlot at its best for an affordable price.

Wine & Food: Delicious with grilled red meats such as Côtes de Boeuf, wild meats, but the wine can also stand up to spicy oriental dishes. Also perfect with old farmers Gouda cheese. As Mr Duroux says, when the wine is young it is the healthiest to drink (because of the higher tannins), but when it's optimally matured, it tastes the best!

Drink at 18C, and decanting is optional (depending on your preference for the softness of tannins).
